Last night we attended a fire safety awareness dinner that was very informative, and of course they were selling fire alarm systems. The presenter (from a company called Masterguard) explained the construction of the most common fire alarms (which we currently have in our home) and why they are not effective, and that they fail to work over 55% of the time. Scary! My dad lost a sister in a house fire and a family friend of ours growing up also had a house fire, so I recognize that this can happen to anyone and I especially want to protect my family.
We had a representative from the company come to our house tonight to recommend a system and give us an estimate. The total is over $3500!!! That includes several fire alarms, radon, gas, carbon monoxide, heat dectors, an escape ladder, 3 fire hydrants and a burn kit. The primary cause of house fires is electricity, and the solution is early warning so everyone can evacuate safely, so an excellent fire alarm system makes sense. Of course my family is priceless and I want to protect them all, so I think we're going to try to find an affordable compromise. I would love suggestions and comments on what people do to protect and educate their families about fire.
